Varnish can restrict flow, affect heat transfer and reduce equipment efficiency.

This book explains how varnish develops and how it can be detected. It also covers practical ways to reduce oil breakdown and control deposits.

  • Varnish and deposit formation
  • Oxidation and thermal degradation
  • Microdieseling
  • Electrostatic discharge
  • Additive drop-out
  • Contamination and hydrolysis
  • Oil breakdown prevention
  • Varnish removal technologies
  • Turbine oil benchmarking
  • Oil analysis for varnish
  • Sustainable lubrication
  • ICML VPR and VIM preparation

Greg Livingstone is Chief Innovation Officer at Fluitec and has around 30 years of experience in industrial lubrication. He is recognised internationally for his work on lubricant degradation, varnish formation and deposit control.

Greg has developed oil analysis tests and patented filtration and treatment technologies used to extend lubricant life. He has published more than 100 technical papers and has contributed to organisations including ICML, STLE and ASTM. He has also played a major role in advancing how industry identifies, measures and manages varnish.

Sanya Mathura is the founder and Managing Director of Strategic Reliability Solutions Ltd. She works across lubrication, reliability and asset management, with a strong focus on lubricant degradation.

Sanya is an ICML-certified Machinery Lubrication Engineer and also holds the ICML Varnish and Deposit Identification and Measurement and Varnish and Deposit Prevention and Removal badges. Together, Greg and Sanya bring deep experience in lubricant degradation, varnish detection and varnish control.
